The New York Times Sees the Virtue of Cask Conditioned Beer

The New York Times ran an article today praising cask conditioned beers. My favorite quote of the article was: "If mass-market kegs are the Wonder bread and Velveeta of the beer world, cask ales are like fresh-baked loaves or artisanal cheeses". I couldn't agree more. That's why I frequent Bridgeport Brewery, The Lucky Labrador, and New Old Lompoc for their selection of cask conditioned beers. UrbanDrinks.com has even started adding tags to bars and restaurants that carry cask conditioned beers. If you know of any other locations, please feel free to add your own tag. Next time you are interested in trying a fresh cask conditioned beer, try using UrbanDrinks.com for suggestions. You can check out the places tagged with "cask conditioned beer" in Portland here. Just a follow-up to my previous article on cask beers, I stopped by another branch of the Lucky Lab in Southwest Portland last night and asked if they had any cask ales. The bar keep looked at me with a blank stare, and after I asked a second time he told me that he had no idea what I was talking about. I then had to describe to him that the very brewery he worked for had cask conditioned beer available at their other locations. It's a little sad to see that the Lucky Labrador has people interacting with their customers who have no clue about the product they sell. Hopefully, Deschutes Brewery doesn't have similarly ignorant employees when they finally open their new location in Portland's Pearl District.
