Rural Drinks

Over the holiday break I had a chance to visit the wonderful Flathead Lake Brewing Company in Montana, and I have to say that they're a force to be reckoned with. They've won some awards for their porter and stout, but I think you'll be seeing the pale ale winning awards very soon. It was fantastic, and head brewmaster Jason Courtney (2002 Small Brew Pub Brew Master of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival) told me (over a beer of course) that he had just started using a new yeast in the pale ale, accounting for the improvement over last year's also-excellent brew. He's a very enthusiastic person and incredibly passionate about making the best beer possible, so I have no doubt we'll be seeing more of Flathead Lake Brewing's beers in the coming years... hopefully at some beer festivals here in Portland.

Flathead Lake is very good. If you want to try a German style beer from Montana try Bayern Brewery from Missoula. My favorite is the Bayern Doppel Bock. Just happens the Belmont Station on 46 and Stark carries Bayern.

Terry, Yeah, Bayern makes some good stuff. I can't remember if I've had the doppel bock though.. I'll give it a try.
